Hand Shadows: a Collaborative Program of Dance and Poetry
with Passionate Heart and Susan Wismer
In 2017 Suzette Sherman and Michele Green danced together at the Guelph Dance Festival, their first professional collaboration in over 40 years. Friends for many decades, they decided to join together to share the connection they felt as mature dance artists and the ways dance has enriched and informed their lives. They created Passionate Heart: Women’s Stories through Dancein collaboration with Dancetheatre David Earle in 2018 as a means to link accessible dance presentations of emotional integrity with small, intimate audiences.
From the beginning, an important mandate of Passionate Heart has been to collaborate with artists from other genres. Poet Susan Wismer is one of four artists invited to participate in creating collaborative performances of dance and spoken word. Over the course of two years, when case counts went down and it was possible, Susan travelled to Guelph to watch Michele and Suzette in rehearsal. Many of the poems in Hand Shadows were inspired by the dances they are paired with as part of the performance.
